KS-BATTSIM

Testing and simulating batteries. Reliable, dynamic, accurate, stable and versatile.

preview

Our battery simulators are highly dynamic sources and sinks that are used for battery, fuel cell and inverter testing as well as fast charging systems and testers or on powertrain test beds.

The KS-Battsim is also popular in other areas where dynamic, precise and powerful DC actuators are required. Voltage-stable at dynamic load changes, they full the high requirements of the technological cutting edge. User-friendly interfaces and simple integration of Matlab models round out the system and enable convenient integration into test beds and automation systems.

Device models

The KS-Battsim is available in three versions: KS-Battsim 4, KS-Battsim 5, and KS-Battsim 5-RC. The latter two are variants based on SiC-MOSFET technology and our modular power converter system, the KS-AMPS. The 5-RC model features galvanically isolated outputs with resonant converter modules. Each system has its own specific advantages and can be optimally deployed to provide an efficient and flexible solution for individual application requirements. Additional system modules, such as the KS-PCU (Power Charging Unit) or the KS-EIS module (Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy), round out the system and provide extensive capabilities for testing and developing power converters and energy storage devices.

Application example: BATTSIM 5RC for Operation at a DC-Grid

Typical technical specifications: P = 500 kW, I = 1000 A, U = 16 – 1500 V, fs = 160 – 240 kHz

Features, system modules and options

KS-EIS Modul

The EIS module is a functional extension of the KS-Battsim designed to measure the frequency-dependent impedance characteristic curve of the test object. The system-integrated design of this module enables the measurement of these parameters even during charging and discharging processes, thereby facilitating online diagnostics regarding aging processes (SOH, SOC).

Ripple function

With the KS DC controllers, the offset control results in a total switching frequency of approximately 160–240 kHz. Thanks to this high average switching frequency, the DC controller can be used to generate ripple voltage and current up to about 1 kHz. An external ripple generator can take over beyond that.

Active damping

  • Each DC controller can actively dampen oscillations in the DC circuit.
  • It suppresses oscillations generated by the DC controller itself and dampens oscillations in the DC circuit caused by other sources.

KS-PCU

The Power Charging Unit expands the functionality of the KS-BattSim, which then serves as a DC power source for fast-charging vehicle batteries. To this end, the system includes an integrated switching unit that supplies power to the DC fast-charging box. The DC fast-charging box is divided into two parts: a stationary unit and a plug-in charging connector module with the corresponding charging cable for common charging standards such as ChaDemo, etc.

KS-Battsafe

The KS-BattSafe system enables the safe testing of energy storage systems and can be flexibly integrated into new facilities or existing test bed infrastructure.

Fully automatic cutting unit

In the event of a fault, the KS HV Docking Box enables the safe, fully automatic disconnection of the de-energized battery connectors.
